CHILD BMI Categories:
Child BMI Categories are based on the BMI percentile, which varies with gender and age. You can calculate the BMI percentile using the CDC Calculator or a chart (Boys/Girls; Niños/Niñas). For example, a 10-year-old boy with a BMI of 23 (a 'normal' BMI for an adult) is above the 95th percentile and obese for his age.
- Overweight = BMI 85th to 94th percentile (previously "At Risk for Overweight")
- Obesity = BMI 95th to 99th percentile (previously "Overweight")
ADULT BMI Categories:
- Underweight = less than 18.5
- Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
- Overweight = 25-29.9
- Obesity = 30 or greater
